Reviews for "A Journey"

Hugh Hill attempts the impossible - a single volume overview of the whole Bible. The result is a powerful tour de force which is never in danger of becoming a historical trawl. Deliberately as in his previous book Hill allows the preacher in him to override the scholar. There is no conflict.  The result is a helpful introductory primer of the Bible. It is simple, timely and applicatory.Christianity is transformative. Be warned this book has that as its goal.

A daunting task, but thoroughly researched and expertly expounded, which left me with a desire for more detailed personal study of each book of the Bible.

This sermon series provided an excellent overview of the Bible in its entirety. It clarified a ‘big picture’ perspective that is too often neglected by many Christians today and I highly commend this book to those who want to gain a richer appreciation of Biblical truths.

By explaining the history and culture Hugh gives flesh to the people and places.

"Your chapters, particularly on some of the more controversial events and stories in the bible, are enlightening as well as inspirational and provide a greater understanding of the background and context in which the incidents took place."

"When I first saw this book I admit to thinking urghh, a weighty book that 'explores the historical setting, the main theological message and what it means for us today' is likely to be heavy indeed, after all most books of this type are often overly academic and a bit dry, or incredibly simple and bit boring, however I was really very pleasantly surprised by how easy to read and engaging this book was. You can tell a seasoned teller of the Bible has written this by it's flowing and easy style. I think this would be a great book for anyone who likes the Goldingay and Wright For Everyone series of commentaries from SPCK as stylistically they have a lot in common, except this one is a one stop quick bible overview."

"It's detailed but not heavy, articulate but not academically challenging, engaging but not overly simple. On the whole I have to say it is one of the better guides to the Bible I've come across in quite a while."

"I found it easy to read and quite insightful and would have no problem recommending it to those starting out in reading the bible, to those who want a quick refresh with some depth or perhaps even to those wanting something to use for a more devotionally orientated study of the bible."
